Charlie The Whale is written in two distinct styles. The tempo is bright in “two” allowing the rhythm section much latitude and then into 4/4 (l’estesso) for the straight ahead jazz section at bar 47. The closed voicing sax section at bar 47 should be played strongly with a “tough” sound. The remainder of the arrangement is a straight ahead jazz feel with emphasis on sound ensemble playing and good time.
