Flute, Clarinet, Bassoon and Piano: Fuging Machine is about a machine in a factory that spends its life making widgets. After a while on the factory line, it discovers an ability to construct fugues, something its designers never intended. A fugue subject, based in part on the “mechanical music” of the factory, arises in the clarinet. The machine expands this into a full fugue, breaking away from the drudgery of making widgets. By the end of the piece, the machine goes back to making widgets, but its existence is enriched by its newfound ability.
