Tangled, which was originally titled Rapunzel, reportedly changed its name so that Disney could market the movie as gender-neutral. Sources indicate that the movie spent six years in production and had an overall cost of approximately $260 million. If the numbers are accurate, it would put Tangled as the second most expensive film of all time, behind Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End weighing in at $300 million, and just ahead of Spider-Man 3, which ranked 3rd at $258 million. This high cost may have been the implementation of a new animation style, blending certain characteristics of both traditional animation and CGI with non-photorealistic rendering, to create something that might resemble a painting, rather than looking overly cartoonish, or pushing the boundaries too far into realism. This was the first time this had been done in an animated film - and the effort shows, because the graphics are truly stunning. Score by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater.
